May 23, 2025, PLYMOUTH, IN – The Grand Rapids Community College men's golf team capped off a successful season with an 18th-place finish at the NJCAA Division II National Championship, held at Swan Lake Resort. Battling through windy, cool, and rainy conditions, the Raiders showed resilience throughout the four-round tournament, highlighted by a standout performance from sophomore Colin Beckett, who earned All-American honors.
The national tournament didn't start as the Raiders hoped, opening with a team score of 327 — their highest round of the week. But they rebounded quickly in round two, posting a 310, their best round of the event, thanks largely to Beckett's phenomenal 69. The sophomore's round featured five birdies and helped GRCC climb the leaderboard.
The Raiders finished the final two rounds with scores of 316 and 315, respectively, concluding the championship in 18th place out of 22 teams. No. 1 ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast edged Illinois Central College by a single stroke to win the national title.
Beckett led GRCC with rounds of 79, 69, 73, and 79 for a 72-hole total of 300 (+12), placing him in a tie for 15th out of 139 competitors. He was in sixth place entering the final round and finished strong enough to be named an NJCAA DII All-American. Beckett wraps up his sophomore season as the top scorer in the region and was previously honored on the All-MCCAA and All-Region teams.
Freshman Owen Rosendall and sophomore Evan Kaiser finished the season on a high note, carding their best rounds of the tournament in the finale. Rosendall fired a 77 to finish at 321 (+33), which included five birdies and an eagle on hole 17 in his final round. He earned All-Conference, All-MCCAA, and All-Region honors for his freshman campaign.
Kaiser posted a final-round 78 to close at 333 (+45), highlighted by eight birdies over the tournament. He was also named All-Conference and All-MCCAA.
Freshman Zach Vaandrager delivered a strong second round with a 77 that featured all four of his tournament birdies. He finished at 326 (+38) and earned All-Conference, All-MCCAA, and All-Region accolades. Fellow freshman Zach Steers contributed with rounds of 82, 83, 78, and 87 for a total of 330 (+42) and added four birdies to his name.
The national championship also marked the final event for head coach John Forton, who announced earlier this season that he would be retiring. Under Forton's leadership, the Raiders have built a dynasty, after winning its 16th consecutive conference title and 12th overall MCCAA championship.
