In addition to serving as the center of athletic programs at Grand Rapids Community College, the Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse has provided numerous benefits to the students, faculty and community who have used the facility since it first became operational in 1976. In 2009 the Ford Fieldhouse received a substantial upgrade which included new lighting, sound, and playing surface.

On May 1, 2018 the Fieldhouse went under an even larger renovation and it reopened in January of 2019. Click here for a virtual tour of the new facility. Starting July 2024, the Fieldhouse will begin renovations on the facility to add an updated fitness center, updated locker rooms, an indoor turf area, and student lounge spaces.  These spaces are expected to be completed by August 2025.

One of the primary purposes of the Ford Fieldhouse is the athletics programs which use the facility to practice and compete. The main gymnasium in the Fieldhouse has a capacity for nearly 4,000 fans.  Last year, 161 students participated in the intercollegiate sports at GRCC, and the facility hosted numerous games and practices. As important as intercollegiate athletics are to the college and its pride, they comprise only a small fraction of the visitations to the facility.  A much larger number of people visit the Fieldhouse to attend exercise science classes offered by the Exercise Science Department. The Criminal Justice Department also makes significant use of the Fieldhouse in training future law enforcement officers.

The Fieldhouse's Fitness Center is open to all students and faculty/staff free of charge allowing internal GRCC community the opportunity to reach their personal fitness goals. External community members who are not associated with the college may purchase a membership at the Fieldhouse online.

Maintaining the Fieldhouse requires an extensive professional staff and close to 20 student employees during the school year.

Finally, it must be mentioned that the activities at the Fieldhouse are not limited to sports. The facility serves well as a venue for banquets both large and small, concerts, commencement programs, lectures, and trade shows. All of these events have been scheduled and successfully executed within the Fieldhouse.

The Mines Golf Club houses 18 holes of rolling fairways and undulating bent grass greens. The course offers playability from four sets of tees, making your round truly exceptional.

The course gets its name from sitting 150 feet above gypsum mines that were utilized as early as the 1860s. The course features 110 feet of elevation change from the highest to lowest point on the course. Renowned architect Mike Devries and his ability to use the natural features and undulations, has created a unique golf course and “up north feel” set in a unique urban setting.

The Raiders head coach, Chris Sobieck is the managing partner of the Mines Golf Club.
