Sept. 10, 2025, KENTWOOD, Mich. – Grand Rapids Community College athletics had a busy week with both soccer teams opening conference play at home against Jackson College today and the men's golf team competing in its first tournament of the season earlier this week.

Men's Soccer

GRCC's men's soccer team (3-1 overall, 1-0 MCCAA) opened league play with a 2-1 win over Jackson College.

The Raiders trailed early after Emmanuel Ndjoli scored from near midfield for Jackson (0-2-1, 0-1-1) in the 5th minute, but GRCC responded before the half. In the 40th minute, Brandon Gomez delivered a pass from midfield to Joel Ramirez, who buried his second goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

GRCC controlled the match, finishing with 27 shots and 10 corner kicks compared to just 12 shots and four corners for Jackson. The pressure paid off in the 77th minute, when sophomore Elvin Bajric netted his third goal of the season – the game-winner.

The Raiders will return to conference action on Friday, Sept. 12 at 12 p.m., hosting Marian University–Ancilla.

Women's Soccer

The GRCC women's soccer team (2-2-1, 0-1 MCCAA) started strong but couldn't hold on in a 3-1 loss to Jackson College (3-3, 2-1 MCCAA).

Freshman Skyelar Albrecht set up the opening goal in the 5th minute, finding Lanee Lewkowski for her second score of the season. GRCC dominated the first half, limiting Jackson to just three shots and taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The second half swung in Jackson's favor, however, as the Jets scored in the 67th, 80th, and 90th minutes to secure the comeback victory.

The Raiders will also face Marian University–Ancilla at home on Friday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.

Men's Golf

GRCC's men's golf team opened its season on Monday and Tuesday at the Mike DeVries Invitational, a 54-hole event hosted by West Texas A&M at Pilgrim's Run Golf Club in Pierson, Mich.

Led by first-year head coach Chris Sobieck, the Raiders sent five freshmen into a field of 13 teams and 87 golfers. GRCC and eventual champion Indian Hills Community College were the only two-year schools competing.

Hank Livington paced GRCC with rounds of 82, 78, and 82 (+23), finishing with six birdies.

Lucas VanMaanen posted +28 (81-80-86) with eight birdies, including five in the opening round.

Hezekiah Nobel shot +38 (90-87-80), recording five birdies.

Carson Osborn finished at +40 (86-87-86), collecting four birdies.

Ethan Voigt rounded out the squad at +51 (92-84-94).

The Raiders will continue their season at the Folds of Honor Challenge, hosted by Grand Valley State University at The Meadows in Allendale, on Sept. 15-17.
