MCCAA Women's Awards
March 11, 2024, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Four Grand Rapids Community College student-athletes earned postseason honors after the Michigan Community College Athletic Association announced on Monday it's 2023-24 women's basketball awards.
Freshmen Tia Richard and Ava Schultz highlighted this year's list of awards by earning All-MCCAA honors, First Team All-Conference honors and were members of the Northern Conference All-Freshman team.
Freshman Kaylie VanDerHulst and sophomore Avery Jirous were named Honorable Mention All-Conference.
"I'm proud of our student-athletes and coaches for strong performances," Athletic Director Lauren Ferullo said. "We have strong programs, with some of the best players in the state, and the nation. They work hard to be successful on the court and in the classroom."
Schultz, a wing from Gaylord, led the team in rebounds per game, 9.2, steals per game, 2.4, and three-pointers made with 47. She was second on the team with a 14.6 scoring average and had seven double-doubles. Her season high in points was 27 at Delta College and had three games were she grabbed a season high 15 rebounds.
Richard, a two-guard from Donaldsonville, Louisiana, led the team with a 14.8 scoring average, scoring in double figures in all but two games. She was second on the team in assists, averaging 3.5 per game. Her season high in points was 25 vs. Kirtland CC and season high in assists was nine vs. Delta College.
Jirous, a two-guard from Wyoming, led the team with 93 assists, averaging 3.6. She also averaged 6.8 points and six rebounds per game. She had a career high 15 points vs. Southwestern Michigan College. In her two years at GRCC she totaled 200 points, 167 rebounds, 102 assists and 47 steals.
VanDerHulst, a forward from Hamilton, played in all 26 games for the Raiders, averaging 6.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.7 blocks per game. She scored a season high 16 points at Delta College and grabbed a season high 14 rebounds at Alpena Community College.
