Mar. 5, 2024, ESCANABA, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College women's basketball season sadly came to an end on Tuesday after losing to Bay College 66-57 in the opening round of the Great Lakes District C Tournament.
Bay, ranked No. 16 in the final NJCAA poll, led 19-7 after one quarter of play. The Norse would lead by as many as 18 in the second and then 32-20 at the break.
In the third quarter, GRCC erupted for 20 points to trail by just seven going into the final quarter. An Ava Schultz three-pointer (her fourth of the night) got GRCC to within five with 1:56 remaining, but that's as close as they could get.
Schultz and Tia Richard each scored 15 points while Kaylie VanDerHulst added 11 points. Richard led the team with six assists and Sophia Modderman led the team with 13 rebounds.
"Extremely proud of how this team grew over the entirety of the season," said head coach David Glazier. "I'm not sure that early in the year this team battles like we did tonight." He continued, "Ultimately this team followed the sophomore leadership of Avery Jirous. Her growth throughout the year was fun to watch and will be hard to replace."
Schultz and Richard finished the season averaging 14.6 and 14.8 points to lead the team. Schultz also led the team in rebounds per game, 9.2, steals per game, 2.4, and three-pointers made with 47.
Jirous led the team with 93 assists, averaging 3.6, and Richard recorded 56, averaging 3.5.
Modderman grabbed her 200th rebound against Bay to lead the team in total rebounds with VanDerHulst finishing right behind her with 199.
