Dec. 4, 2024, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College men's and women's basketball teams delivered commanding performances on Wednesday, sweeping Kirtland Community College with decisive victories. The women's team set the tone with a 56-41 win, followed by the men's team's explosive 118-66 triumph. Neither team trailed at any point during their games, showcasing their dominance on both ends of the court.
Women's Game: GRCC 56, Kirtland 41
The GRCC women started strong, jumping out to an 11-0 lead and finishing the first quarter with a commanding 22-6 advantage. Their aggressive start and unrelenting defense propelled them to lead by as many as 24 points during the game.
The Raiders' dominance on the boards played a crucial role, as they out-rebounded Kirtland 56-48. Three GRCC players grabbed double-digit rebounds, emphasizing their physicality in the paint. Sophomore Tianna Daye led all scorers with 18 points while adding six rebounds, three assists, and three steals to her impressive stat line.
Averi Peot recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Ava Schultz contributed nine points, 10 rebounds, a game-high five assists, and three steals. La' Anna Griffin anchored the team's rebounding efforts with a game-high 12 boards, complementing her eight points.
Men's Game: GRCC 118, Kirtland 66
The GRCC men extended their winning streak to four games, improving their record to 7-2 in spectacular fashion. Their offensive depth was on full display as 17 of the team's 18 players scored, with the bench contributing a season-high 88 points.
The Raiders' high-energy play overwhelmed Kirtland, highlighted by nine blocks and a 59-37 rebounding edge. GRCC's efficient shooting also stood out, as they connected on 57% of their field-goal attempts and 37.5% from beyond the arc.
Freshman Darius Baker led all scorers with a career-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, adding five rebounds to his tally. Zeekeal Jackson also had a career night, scoring 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while contributing six rebounds and a game-high three steals. Tyran Thomas added 15 points and six rebounds, while Benjamin Koubek and Gaden Muxlow chipped in with 11 and eight points, respectively. Muxlow also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.
Looking Ahead
The GRCC men's team will return home to face Washtenaw Community College on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 6:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the women's team will travel to North Central Michigan College for their next matchup on Thursday, Dec. 7, at 1:00 p.m.
