Dec. 6, 2024, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College men's basketball team continued its winning ways on Friday night, cruising to a commanding 114-66 victory over Washtenaw Community College. The Raiders, now 8-2 on the season, extended their win streak to five games, showcasing dominance on both ends of the court.
The Raiders jumped out to a 48-26 lead at halftime and never looked back, putting on an offensive clinic in the second half. GRCC's balanced attack was highlighted by an impressive statistic: 17 different players found the scoring column. Leading the way was Tyran Thomas, who posted a game-high 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting while grabbing nine rebounds.
Zachary Carlson, making his first start of the season, recorded a career-high 10 points along with three assists and three steals. Jaden Montague also stepped up with a career-best performance, contributing 13 points, four assists, and two steals. Javon Golson was flawless from the field, going 6-of-6 to finish with 12 points and seven rebounds. Marshaun Flakes made his presence felt as a facilitator, dishing out a career-high seven assists to complement his seven points and two steals.
"We're firing on all cylinders right now," said GRCC head coach Joe Fox. "The depth and unselfish play of this team are what make us so dangerous. To have 17 players score and to dominate in every phase of the game shows just how connected this group is."
GRCC's dominance was evident in the box score:
- The Raiders shot 55.2% from the field, compared to just 38.1% for Washtenaw.
- They out rebounded the visitors 55-33 and dished out 20 more assists (27-7).
- Defensively, the Raiders recorded 18 steals and forced 24 turnovers, while committing only 11 of their own.
Over the five-game win streak, GRCC has averaged 104.8 points per game while holding opponents to just 72 points per contest, a testament to their efficiency on offense and stifling defense.
With little time to rest, the Raiders will look to keep their momentum rolling as they travel to Petoskey for a Saturday afternoon match-up against North Central Michigan College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
