Feb. 15, 2025, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College basketball teams took on Marian University-Ancilla on Saturday, with the women's team securing a statement victory while the men's team fell in a hard-fought contest.
Women's Recap: GRCC 68, Marian University-Ancilla 49
The women's basketball team (8-11, 6-5) pulled off an impressive upset over the highly ranked Ancilla Chargers (22-4, 8-3), never trailing after jumping out to a 6-0 lead. The win brings the Raiders within one victory of clinching a postseason berth, with three conference games remaining.
GRCC's defensive pressure and efficiency were key, as they forced 21 Ancilla turnovers while committing just 13 themselves— their third-lowest total of the season. The Raiders also dominated shooting, hitting 40% from the field compared to the Chargers' 24%, and 30% from three-point range against Ancilla's 15%.
Reigning conference Player of the Week Ava Schultz led the Raiders with 19 points—scoring 14 in the first half—while surpassing the 500-point career mark at GRCC. Tia Richard added 17 points and tied Schultz with a team-high eight rebounds. Tianna Daye had an all-around stellar performance, contributing 18 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high five assists and five steals.
Men's Recap: Marian University-Ancilla 92, GRCC 84
The men's game was a back-and-forth thriller, featuring 19 lead changes before Ancilla (19-7, 8-3) pulled away late to defeat GRCC (18-8, 5-6).
Freshman Marshaun Flakes had a dominant performance, scoring 34 points—the second-highest total of his college career—while also leading GRCC with 11 rebounds, five assists, and a game-high three steals. His late and-one layup with 1:38 remaining brought the Raiders within two, 86-84, but Ancilla finished strong with six unanswered points to seal the win.
Tyran Thomas also had a standout night, posting a season-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. It was his fifth time in the past seven games scoring 20 or more points. However, the Raiders struggled with depth, as Ancilla's bench outscored GRCC's 31-11. The Chargers also had a shooting edge, finishing at 49% from the field compared to the Raiders' 39%.

Both teams return home on Wednesday to face Glen Oaks Community College. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m., with a chance to clinch a spot in the regional tournament, while the men's game follows at 7:30 p.m.
