Box Score 2 Feb. 27, 2024, GRAYLING, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College men's and women's basketball teams finished it's regular season finale by sweeping Kirtland Community College on Tuesday night. The women's team started the night with a 51-45 win, followed up by a 90-78 victory for the men's squad.
Meanwhile down in Tallahassee, Florida, the baseball team racked up a season-high 15 runs, but lost 14-7 in game one and 10-8 in the nightcap.
The women's basketball game was back and forth all night long, with Kirtland leading 16-9 after one, then the Raiders leading 27-21 at the break. Kirtland then came back to regain the lead 35-33 after three quarters of play.
Kirtland's Ernestina Arthur put her team up 45-40 with 4:16 remaining, but it would by the final basket of the night for the Firebirds. GRCC scored the final 11 points including the go ahead three-pointer by Tia Richard with 58 seconds to go. Anna Tubbergen sealed the victory with a three of her own with 16 seconds to go.
Ava Schultz lead all scorers with 20 points, including three of the team's seven three-point baskets. She also had six rebounds, two steals and a block.
Sophia Modderman and Avery Jirous led the team with 10 rebounds, and Jirous led the team with five assists. Kaylie VanDerHulst had 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Raider's men's basketball team lead 45-32 at the half, but Kirtland scored the first nine points of the second half to get back in the ball game and by the 14:51 mark grabbed it's first lead, 51-50.
GRCC's Tristan McRoberts jumper with 6:57 remaining gave the Raiders the lead back for good. McRoberts later would make back-to-back steals and dunks to seal the victory.
McRoberts finished with eight points, six assists, four steals and two blocks.
Joe Francis lead all scorers with 25 points. The sophomore guard finished his two-year junior college career with a staggering 973 points.
Jovante Jones and Spencer Willman also ended their sophomore years on a big note. Jones had 15 points and a game-high seven assists. Willman was 6-of-10 from the floor, finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
GRCC's men's basketball season sadly came to an end with a record of 14-15 (6-8), but the women's team is still alive to defend it's district title of a year ago. The women's team (10-15, 7-7) finished fourth in the conference and will play on the road next Tuesday in its first game of the tournament.
Back in Tallahassee, GRCC's baseball team jumped out to a 4-2 lead in game one, but TCC would put five on the board in the fourth and then seven more in the six to win 14-7. Ohlen Bond got the start for the Raiders.
GRCC tallied a season-high 11 hits in the loss, with Dylan Nguyen leading the way with three hits. Xavier Allen (double) and Jacob Pitt each had two hits.
The nightcap was even more of a heart breaker for the Raiders, as they had an 8-6 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. But the Eagles, an NJCAA Division I college, scored four more times to win it 10-8.
GRCC racked up 11 more hits, including three from sophomore Trevin Laming who had him self a game. The outfielder also scored two runs, hit his second home run of the year and led the team with four RBI.
Cam Seth, Allen and Joey Hysell all had doubles.
The baseball team travels to Cuthbert, Georgia on Wednesday to take on Andrew College in a doubleheader starting at noon.
