Raiders Fall to KVCC on Sophomore Day, Enter Final Week Tied for First

Feb. 21, 2026, GRAND RAPIDS, MI. – The Grand Rapids Community College men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon with an 89–67 loss to Kalamazoo Valley Community College on Sophomore Day.

The Raiders dropped to 20-7 overall and 10-3 in conference play, moving from sole possession of first place into a three-way tie atop the standings with KVCC and Lansing Community College with one regular-season game remaining before postseason play. The Cougars improved to 19-8 (10-3) and extended their winning streak to five.

GRCC never led in the contest and struggled with ball security, committing 22 turnovers that led to 26 KVCC points. The Raiders forced 10 turnovers defensively but converted them into just four points. One of the conference's highest-scoring teams at 95 points per game entering the day, GRCC was held to a season-low 67 points while shooting a season-low 39.7 percent from the field, including 4-of-22 from three-point range.

Despite the loss, sophomore Matt Richards delivered a standout performance in his final home game, recording his eighth straight double-double with a team-high 15 points and 15 rebounds. Richards currently leads the Michigan Community College Athletic Association in rebounds per game and ranks among the nation's top 10 in that category.

Fellow sophomore Tyran Thomas added 14 points, while sophomore Nate Keil scored 13. Freshman Jared Demoff chipped in nine points and a team-high five assists.

Seven sophomores were honored prior to tip-off as part of Sophomore Day ceremonies.

The Raiders still have a path to an outright conference championship and a number one seed in regionals. GRCC must win its regular-season finale at Lansing on Feb. 24 and will need KVCC to lose its final game against Glen Oaks Community College.
