Box Score 2 Dec. 14, 2024, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was a tale of two results for the Grand Rapids Community College basketball teams on Saturday, as the women's squad fell 53-40 to Muskegon Community College, while the men's team extended their winning streak with a 78-70 victory over Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Illinois.
Men's Game Recap
The GRCC men's basketball team continued their impressive run, earning their eighth straight victory with a come-from-behind win over Oakton Community College. The Raiders (11-2) overcame a sluggish first half, where they shot just 31.4% from the field and 14.3% from beyond the arc, to dominate the second half with a 54.1% shooting effort, including 44.4% from three-point range.
Trailing by 10 points (44-34) early in the second half, GRCC launched a decisive 22-5 run, capped by a Marshaun Flakes basket that put them ahead 56-49 with just over 12 minutes to play. The Raiders never relinquished the lead, using their defense and fast-break opportunities to seal the win.
Key to their success was an aggressive defense that turned 19 Oakton turnovers into 26 points, along with dominance in the paint (40-28 points) and seven blocked shots to Oakton's one.
Bashir Neely had a standout performance, leading all players with 26 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Jack Agema added 12 points and a team-high four assists, while Tyran Thomas contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Javon Golson led the team with eight rebounds, and Ethan Bennett anchored the defense with three blocks.
The Raiders will face their toughest test of the season on Dec. 16, traveling to play South Suburban College, ranked 8th in the nation.
Women's Game Recap
The GRCC women's basketball team struggled offensively, posting their lowest scoring output of the season in the loss to Muskegon Community College. The Raiders (1-4) fell behind early and never held the lead, as Muskegon (9-2) controlled the game throughout.
Both teams had difficulties shooting, with GRCC hitting just 28.1% from the field and Muskegon slightly better at 31.1%. Despite their struggles, Muskegon built a lead as large as 19 points, keeping GRCC out of reach.
Sophomore Ava Schultz led the Raiders with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Tianna Daye contributed 10 points and five rebounds. Tatyana Hardiman chipped in six points and seven boards.
The Raiders will look to regroup as they prepare to face Cuyahoga Community College on Dec. 20.
