Grand Rapids, Mich. -- For the second straight week
Deiona Rogers was named the Division II National Player of the Week. Rogers averaged 25.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 9.5 assists and 2 steals while leading the Lady Raiders to wins over Jackson College (71-54 on Feb. 10) and Lansing Community College (87-56 on Feb 12). After defeating Lake Michigan CC (81-79 on Feb 17) the Raiders increased their win streak to seven games. GRCC will face #9 Kalamazoo Valley CC (24-1, 13-0) tonight (Feb. 19) in the Ford Fieldhouse where GRCC will look to revenge their mid-season loss to the Cougars. In the first meeting between the two teams, KVCC dominated an injury riddled GRCC team 66-45.
During GRCC's seven game win streak, Deiona Rogers and
Courtney Zenner have teamed to create one of the most talented back-court tandems in the country, and one that has transformed the 2015-2016 Raiders into real contenders as the team heads into the Region XII Tournament. During the steak, Rogers has averaged 23.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 7.1 assists and 3.4 steals. To give a better frame of reference, Rogers would be fourth in the country in scoring and assists when projecting what she is doing over a seven game stretch to the entire season.
Rogers back-court mate, Courtney Zenner, has been on an extraordinary pace as of late, shooting the lights out in every gym she's entered. For the season Zenner is shooting an impressive 41% from deep on 152 attempts. During the win streak, however, Courtney has been unconscious, hitting a staggering 56% (28/50) on her three point attempts. In addition to raining in threes, Courtney is averaging 22 points a game, 3.8 rebounds and 3 assists during the win streak. For the season, Zenner is leading the Raiders in scoring at 17.8 ppg, while Rogers averages 14.9,
Regan Cross 11 and
Kristen Schubring 10.5 are the other Raiders in double figures. .
The Raiders will play their last home regular season game, tonight against #9 Kalamazoo Valley Community College in the Ford Fieldhouse at 5:30 PM. The men's team will follow at 7:30 PM.
