Jan. 2, 2025, PORT HURON, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end Friday afternoon, falling 48–41 to Macomb Community College in the opening game of the Skippers New Year's Classic in Port Huron.
The loss drops GRCC to 10–4 on the season and marked the Raiders' second setback to Macomb this year, with their previous loss also coming against the Monarchs on Nov. 30 (55–45).
After a difficult first half that saw GRCC trail 28–12 at the break, the Raiders responded with a strong defensive effort in the second half, outscoring Macomb 29–20. Despite the surge, the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Offensively, GRCC was held to season lows in points (41), field-goal percentage (23.6%), and free throw attempts (5). However, the Raiders were disruptive defensively throughout the game, forcing 16 steals compared to just eight for Macomb, committing seven fewer turnovers overall, and recording four blocks to Macomb's two.
Sophia Wozniak led the Raiders with 12 points, while Tianna Daye and Avery DePagter added seven points apiece. Harmonie Belton delivered a standout defensive performance, recording a career-high seven steals—nearly half of the team's total—while also leading GRCC with five assists. Emma Picarazzi anchored the interior with a team-high 10 rebounds.
GRCC will look to bounce back on Saturday when it faces the host school, St. Clair County Community College, at 3 p.m. in the final game of the Skippers New Year's Classic.
