Grand Rapids, MI – GRCC's 2-2 women's basketball team visit Henry Ford Community College's 0-2 Hawks tonight with the chance to move above .500 after a tough 60-62 loss to Hope College JV over the weekend.
With four games played thus far GRCC is led offensively by freshman
Courtney Zenner and sophomores
Deiona Rogers and
Kristen Schubring. Zenner's 17 points per game and .587 shooting percentage are team highs, but Rogers and Schubring's 13 ppg are nothing to balk at.
Rogers leads the team in rebounds with 35 total averaging 8.8 per game and has recorded 20 assists and 13 steals.
Zenner's 17 assists and 10 steals leave her just ahead of freshman
Renay Palmer with 8 assists and 10 steals as well.
As a team GRCC is 20-56 from behind the arc, out shooting their opponents .357 to .230 and .397 to .326 from the field at-large. Collectively the Raiders are also winning most of their battles down low, out-rebounding their opponents by a narrow margin.
By the numbers GRCC has handled the ball more effectively and shot better at the line than those they've faced thus far, but given their two losses have come by a combined three points, GRCC's women will have to continue to make improvements both at the free throw line and in minimizing turnovers to edge out tougher teams in tight games.
With 25, 21, 17 and 16 turnovers GRCC is trending in the right direction, but in their last loss to Hope's JV Dutchmen, a nearly .750 free throw average fell to under 50%.
At 0-2 Henry Ford is hungry for a win. Having fallen to NJCAA DI #5 Gulf Coast Community College and LSU Eunice, another NJCAA DI team, Henry Ford's only tests have been tough.
Tip off tonight will happen promptly at 7:00PM.
