Box Score Grand Rapids, Mich – The Grand Rapids Community College men's basketball team toppled the NJCAA's #2 South Suburban Community College last night 96-88 last night in an overtime thriller.
GRCC's men improve to 13-7 overall and remain tied for third place in the MCCAA West with Ancilla College and Lansing Community College, 3.5 games behind first place Glen Oaks Community College.
The underdog Raider squad trailed the Bulldogs by as many as 9 points in the first half, but a 24-10 scoring led run spearheaded by
Miles Robinson and
DeMarkus Stuckey helped the Raiders close the half with a one point 34-33 advantage.
Stuckey and Robinson combined for 24 of GRCC's 34 first half points as Robinson shot 6-of-9 from the field and 1-of-2 from the line with one 3 while Stuckey went 2-of-2 from the arc and the line while 3-of-5 from the field.
The second half was hotly contested and concluded with five lead changes in the final minutes of play. GRCC went up 81-76 following a 7-1 run late in the game, but the Bulldog's Jalen Brown, a 6-8 sharp-shooting forward, drained a three shrinking the Raiders lead to 81-79.
Miles Robinson hit 2-of-2 from the line in the double bonus to extend GRCC's lead to 83-79 with 21.7 second to go in regulation, but South Suburban answered on the other end of the floor with a quick layup to bring the score within 2 points 81-83.
The resulting inbound was turned over to the Bulldogs who capitalized with a quick layup tying the game at 83 each forcing the overtime period as GRCC was unable to duplicate the remarkable shot that allowed them to down KVCC in dramatic fashion just a couple weeks ago.
GRCC never trailed in the overtime period outscoring the Bulldogs 13-5 in a 96-88 overtime win.
Leading the Bulldogs was Jalen Brown who finished the night with 20 points, 6 rebounds and three blocks. Brown shot 8-of-16 from the field while 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Charles Knowles and Antonio Levy combined for 29 points and 13 rebound for the Bulldogs.
Miles Robinson had a career night finishing with a season and career high 33 points while adding five steals and four assists.
DeMarkus Stuckey led the Raiders in assists with 7 while adding 21 points and two steals.
Courtney Hill finished with 20 points, 4 assists and three steals.
Cameron Burhannon,
Nate Hollenbeck and
Willie Duke each grabbed 6 rebounds for the Raiders.
GRCC took far better care of the ball allowing 11 turnovers—half the number they allowed when facing Glen Oaks on Saturday.
GRCC shot .485 from the field, .364 from the arc and .750 from the line to earn the win.
The Raiders resume conference play Wednesday night against Muskegon Community College as both men's and women's team embark to the lakeshore for contests starting at 5:30 and 7:30PM.
Muskegon's men are 2-9 in conference play while 9-14 overall 8 games out of first and the 6
th place team in the MCCAA West.
The Lady Jayhawks are 5-6 in conference play and tied for 4
th with Glen Oaks in the West 6 games out of first place Lake Michigan College.
