Box Score Grand Rapids, Mich – The Grand Rapids Community College women's basketball team opened up at home against Mid-Michigan's Lakers at the Ford Fieldhouse falling to the Lakers 65-81 to start the season 0-1.
The Raiders shot 47% from the field –3% better than the Lakers at 44%--but struggled from the line making just 8-of-19 to MMCC's 10-of-14. Both teams struggled with turnovers as the Lakers gave up the ball 17 times and the Raiders 21.
MMCC's Erika Wendling and Jo Hamlin led their team in scoring with 18 each. Hamlin added two steals, two assists and four rebounds while Wendling contributed 11 rebounds, four steals, and 1 assist for a double-double.
Kara Hughston nearly matched Wendling and Hamlin's scoring with 17, and both Jasmyn Parker-Urban and Karli Jacob each earned double digit scoring figures with 10 and 11 points respectively.
GRCC's women were led in scoring by Sophomore
Andrea Straw (Rockford, MI) who finished the night with 17 points while adding 7 assists and 6 rebounds. Freshman
Kristen Shubring (Novi, M) (Rockford, MI) led GRCC is rebounds 8 adding 11 points to the board.
Ciara Sundermann (Pleasant Lake, MI)'s 9 assists were the highest for the Raiders. Sunderman added 7 points and 5 rebounds.
Sara Karamol (Rockford, MI) added 8 points and two assists on the night.
Jayla Branch (Grand Rapids, MI) scored 9 with a team high 4 steals.
Up next for the Raiders are St. Clair County Community College's Skippers. The Skippers are untested in 2014-15 and host GRCC at 3:00PM on Saturday November 8
th.
