Raiders dominate Jayhawks

Box Score

Muskegon, MI—Both the men and women earned a victory over West Michigan rival Muskegon Community College on Wednesday evening, and hope to keep their winning ways alive tomorrow night as they take on Ancilla College. The guys defeated the Jayhawks by a score of 80-61 and the women won by a 77-74 margin.

The GRCC ladies squad took to the court first in Muskegon, and got off to a hot start. The ladies went ahead by a score of 42-32 at half, and although Muskegon made a valiant effort at a comeback, were able to hold on to secure the victory.

Kayla Rosinski and Stephanie Stevens were a force to be reckoned with against the ‘Hawks. The gruesome twosome combined for more than half of the Raiders total points, with 21 for Rosinski and 22 for Stevens.

Coach Tracy Little was very impressed with their play.

"Steph and Kayla were quite the duo tonight.  Offensively, they obviously put the ball through the net, but equally impressive was their defensive play.  Pressuring Muskegon guards created turnovers  that resulted in Raider points.  Both girls crashed the boards for a combined 12 rebounds."

The impressive offensive figures are bolstered by some solid defensive ones as well. Sophomore Meghan Mitchell grabbed 10 of her 12 boards in the defensive zone and led her squad with 8 assists. Mitchell also had a block and nabbed a mind boggling 6 steals.

Said Coach Little, "Meghan has come up huge for us; it's great to have her on the floor as she contributes in multiple ways and that puts some pressure on our opponents... strategy-wise."

The win brings the Raiders to a 4-9 overall record on the season and a 2-2 record in conference play.  This season, why trying at times, is looking brighter according to the coaching staff.

"We have a great group of young women working hard to get better every day.  Their hard work is going to pay off."

The men followed with another impressive Raider outing.

Deontae Hudson had been looking forward to putting on a show in front of his hometown crowd, and that’s exactly what he did. Hudson led his squad in scoring yet again, this time around putting up 16 points. Deontae also had a block and 8 boards during the game.

Although most of his high school teammates are either retired or playing elsewhere, Deontae was excited about getting the opportunity to play in front of some familiar faces.

“I know most of the girls on their women’s team, and my family will get to come out and watch me play.”

Hudson and company came out of the gates strong, and scored 42 of their 80 points in the first half. Teammate Alex Mustert put forth an equally strong effort, with 16 points on the evening. Fellow Raiders Willie Duke, Miles Robinson & Daryl White added another 14, 12 and 11 points respectively.

Both the men and women squads have little time to rest. The teams will take tonight as an opportunity to rest up before conference rivals, Ancilla College, come to town on Friday evening. The Raiders are scheduled to host the Chargers at the Hunsberger Arena, with the women taking the court first at 5:30 PM followed by the men at 7:30.
