Grand Rapids, MI-- The Raiders squeaked by the Bruins of Kellogg Community College on Tuesday night by a score of 79-70. The team struggled in the first half and walked off the court down by a score of 29-31. Facing an early end to their season, the squad regrouped to earn the right to head to Ancilla to advance to the next round of playoff action.
Jared Mysliwiec scored 12 of his team high 26 points during the first half of play to lead the Raiders, and
Micah Gates,
Arik Hesselink and
T.J. McCutcheon each added 4 points apiece. Kellogg standout and Grand Rapids native Steve Roper struggled to find the bottom of the net in the first half, hitting only a pair of free throws. Roper fouled 3 times in the first half and found his playing time limited.
Down by a bucket to start the second half of play, the Raiders capitalized on a frustrated Bruins squads fouls. The team fouled 10 times in the second half of play, including one technical to Quincy Armstrong Jr and 4 fouls to teammate Decari Nunn.
Steve Roper exploded and knocked down a trio of threes on his way to scoring 20 second half points.
The Raiders looked to be a more focused and determined team in the final 20 minutes of play. Mysliwiec hit 6 of 7 free throws and scored 4 buckets. The Raiders outsocred Kellogg 50-39 in the second half to earn the win.
GRCC will head to Ancilla next to do battle with conference rival Muskegon Community College on Friday. The teams have met twice this season, with each team walking away with a victory at home. The Raiders have outscored Muskegon 154-148 this season.
