Grand Rapids, MI-- The Raiders guys and girls basketball squads are gearing up to head to Kalamazoo to take on the KVCC Cougars. The last time the clubs met the guys walked away with an 84-57 blowout, and the women fell just short to the then #4 ranked ladies squad by a score of 72-77. The men hope to bring their current winning streak up to 3 games, while the women will look to regain their winning form. The women take the court first at 1:00 PM and the men follow at 3:00 PM.
The lady Raiders showed a lot of grit and determination against a powerhouse KVCC squad last time around. Destiney Robinson posted a team high 18 points and teammate Hailey Majewski added 16 more as the Raiders came up just short.
This time around the ladies are playing with a heavily depleated squad. After losing nearly half of the team to eligibility issues, the girls are looking to prove that they are still a genuine threat. With Robinson nearing her return after suffering a spraigned ankle, the team should prove to be a tight offensive machine.
Sophomore Janele Johnson-Ellis is leading the team with an average of 16.7 points per game followed by Robinson with an average of 11.4 ppg. Jordyn Priestley has stepped in to fill the void when Destiney Robinson went down with an injury, and has averaged upwards of 13 points per game through the last three contests.
With a 3-6 record in conference play, the girls need to get a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
When the men squared off last time around Jared Mysliwiec and Alex Lyle hooked up to account for nearly half of the Raiders scoring with 20 points and 21 points apiece respectively. Defensively minded T.J. McCutcheon put forth a strong performance and grabbed 6 steals.
Leading KVCC's offensive charge were Daeq Mitchell-Fields with 10 points and Courtney Hill with 9. Ryan Bowering and De'Tavia Moore both grabbed 8 rebounds for the Cougars.
With a 12-7 overall record and a 7-2 in conference record the Raiders sit just 1 game behind Lansing CC. With 3 players averaging over 10 points per game, GRCC is poised to walk away with the W to move within a 1/2 game of the MCCAA Western lead, and potentially a tie for first place, providing Lansing CC loses.
