Grand Rapids, MI-- Both the men and women walked away with a victory Wednesday night at Hunsberger Arena. The guys improved to 11-3 in the MCCAA and 16-8 overall with a 114-90 victory, while the women clinched their spot in the NJCAA District G playoffs with a commanding 79-49 win.
The women took the court first at the Ford Fieldhouse, and began their domination early on. Both
Destiney Robinson and
Katie Mitchell put up 14 points to lead their team. Mitchell also grabbed 5 steals and 6 boards.
Tatiyana Walker was solid on D all night and walked off with 15 total rebounds, 9 of which came in her own zone.
The win puts the girls at am 11-12 overall record on the season with a 6-8 record in conference play.
Roy Jackson, Jr. continued to heat up for the Raiders when the men took the court, and delivered a team leading 22 points for his squad.
Tyler Krim followed with 19 points, and 5 other members of the GRCC team got on the board for 10 points or more.
Jimmy Carroll, Jr. had a particularly strong outting, posting 10 assists and 5 steals. The 10 assists and his 12 points gave the sophomore a double-double, and made him the second Raider to reach a milestone in as many games. Jimmy eclipsed the 300 point career mark and now sits at 307 points scored.
The Raiders stimied the Ancilla defense and turned the ball over a season low 4 times during the match, with no turn overs at all during the second half of play.
Joby Renbarger was on fire for the Chargers, leading his team with 38 points and 13 total rebounds. Teammates Marc Constable and Ben Gilbert added 20 points and 14 points respectively, but it still wasn't enough to cool down the red hot Raider offense.
The win leaves the guys as the sole holder of the second place slot in the MCCAA's Western Conference, 1 game ahead of Muskegon CC.
Both teams will have their hands full as they take the road to do battle with Jackson Community College on Saturday. The last time they met Jacksons men and women's squads dealt GRCC a pair of losses. With 2 games left during the regular season, a pair of victories would give the Raiders some much needed cushion in the rankings.
