Perrysburg, OH – GRCC’s women’s basketball teams goes 1-1 on the weekend but picks up their first win of the 2012-13 season under Head Coach Tracy Little at the Owens Tip Off Classic.
While 0-1 and traveling to face their first round of NJCAA opponents with a team of 11 freshman and one returner, GRCC’s Raiders were likely anxious about what the weekend would bring. Quickly the team proved they have the ability to contend with anyone.
GRCC first squared off against Oakland Community College who entered the contest sharing an identical 0-1 record.
GRCC fell behind Oakland and found themselves down 31-42 in the half. Down 64-77 with 1:40 left in the contest, GRCC went on a 11-0 scoring run leaving them down by only 2 points with 12.4 seconds remaining. Despite that second half surge, GRCC couldn’t rally as Oakland’s Murphy hit two free throws to GRCC before Danielle Harrison made GRCC’s final bucket resulting in a 77-79 loss.
0-2the Raiders prepared for Sunday’s contest against Wayne County Community College. Wayne, like GRCC, was looking to get on the right track following a tough 43-103 loss to the #8 nationally ranked Owens Express.
Again GRCC found themselves down at the half, 28-31. Down but not out, GRCC battled back in the second outscoring Wayne’s Wildcats 44-35 to earn their first win of 2012, 72-66.
GRCC was led in scoring over the weekend by Freshman forward
Danielle Goad who scored 41 points on the weekend, 21 and 20 respectively, while also bringing down 16 rebounds.
Freshman
Danielle Harrison and
Kayla Rosinski also contributed consistently over the weekend as Harrison headed home with 32 points and 17 rebounds and Rosinski finished with 25 points and 10 boards.
GRCC now has one full week to prepare before their home-stand starting next Monday. The Raiders will first face Calvin College’s JV team on Monday the 19
th of November at 5:30. The following day, they will host Hope College’s JV team at 6:00PM.
The matchup with Calvin’s Knights could be a promising opportunity for the Raiders to even out their season at 2-2 as the teams squared off in a preseason scrimmage on November 1
st where GRCC took the Knights 56-52.
