University Center, MI—The guys dropped their first game to a tough Mid-Michigan CC squad by a score of 79-68 on Friday and turned things around with a 96-83 victory over Delta College on Saturday. They now boast a 5-4 record on the season.
To open the tournament the Mid-Michigan CC Lakers jumped out ahead quickly and headed into half time with a 21 point lead. The Raiders scored a bit more in the second half, and would bring the margin as close as 10 points, but Mid-Michigan capitalized on some sloppy play by the Raiders who turned the ball over 16 times in the second half alone.
Leading the Raiders were T.J. McCutcheon and Alex Lyle with 12 points apiece and Arik Hesselink and Micah Gates each with 10. Gates also posted 7 boards. Mid-Michigan had a plethora of players with 10 or more points, and they were led by Sheldon Lowman who scored a team high 18 points.
Saturday’s game versus host Delta College was a shootout. The Raiders emerged victorious with a 96-83 victory over a frustrated Delta team.
Heading into half time Grand Rapids was up 44-43. Raider freshman Tyler Krim went on a rampage and scored 22 of his team leading 28 points during the second half. Teammate Alex Lyle posted 18 points and Jimmy Carroll, Jr. had 10 assists. Delta was led by Jody Hill with 19 points.
GRCC heads to Toledo this Friday to take on Owen’s CC. The Express overwhelmed the Raiders the last time the two met, and GRCC will be looking for some vengeance.
