GRCC Welcomes Home Doug Barrow as New Women's Soccer Head Coach

Mar. 24, 2026, GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Grand Rapids Community College has announced the hiring of Doug Barrow as the new head coach of its women's soccer program. A Grand Rapids native, Barrow returns to his alma mater to lead the Raiders into a new era following the departure of Mario Zuniga-Gil, who was recently named head coach at Aquinas College.

A graduate of East Kentwood High School, GRCC, and Grand Valley State University, Barrow brings a deep connection to the West Michigan soccer community along with a diverse and accomplished coaching background.

Barrow returns to GRCC after building an impressive résumé with Midwest United FC, where he coached and directed players across multiple age groups and competitive levels in both the boys' and girls' game. His experience includes player development, tactical planning, match analysis, and overall program leadership.

He also competed collegiately with the Grand Valley State club team and holds a U.S. Soccer Federation B License, along with United Soccer Coaches diplomas in goalkeeping and futsal.

Barrow has established a coaching philosophy centered on accountability, professionalism, tactical organization, and long-term player development. His background extends beyond coaching, with experience as a match official and in performance analysis—bringing a comprehensive and detail-oriented understanding of the game.

As he steps into his new role, Barrow is focused on building a competitive culture that emphasizes growth both on and off the field while strengthening ties within the West Michigan soccer community.

"I'm incredibly excited and honored to be named the head coach of the GRCC women's soccer program," said Barrow. "GRCC has been an important part of my own journey, so the opportunity to return and lead this program is especially meaningful. I'm looking forward to building a team centered on hard work, accountability, tactical growth, and a culture that our players, alumni, and supporters can be proud of."

Lauren Ferullo, Director of Athletics at GRCC, expressed enthusiasm about the program's new leadership.

"Doug brings a tremendous passion for the game, a strong commitment to student-athlete development, and deep roots in our community," said Ferullo. "His experience in building players and programs, combined with his connection to GRCC, makes him the ideal person to lead our women's soccer program forward.  We're excited about the vision and energy he brings to Raider athletics."
