Historic Win: GRCC Women's Soccer Earns First-Ever Postseason Victory in Region XII Tournament

Box Score

Oct. 28, 2025, SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College women's soccer team made history Tuesday afternoon, earning its first-ever postseason victory with a 1-0 win over Jackson College in the opening round of the NJCAA Region XII Tournament.

The fifth-seeded Raiders, in just their third year as a program, battled fourth-seeded Jackson to a scoreless first half before freshman midfielder Nadia Perez delivered the decisive moment. With 16:57 remaining, Perez found the back of the net for her second goal of the season, giving GRCC the lead that would stand until the final horn.

Defense and goalkeeping proved to be the difference. Freshman goalkeeper Nyleese Bazan-Hernandez was outstanding between the posts, stopping all seven shots on goal she faced, including a clutch save on Jackson's final attempt as time expired to preserve the shutout.

"This is a huge moment for our program," head coach Mario Zuniga-Gil said. "To come on the road, stay composed, and earn our first postseason win shows how far this group has come in just three years."

The game was tightly contested from start to finish, with Jackson holding a 12-10 edge in total shots, seven on goal for the home team, and four for the visitors. Both defenses limited opportunities in the first half, combining for just 11 total shots before the Raiders capitalized on one of their few second-half chances.

With the win, GRCC improves to 7-6-2 overall and advances to the Region XII semifinals, where they will take on #10-ranked and top-seeded Schoolcraft College on Friday, November 1 at 11 a.m. in Marysville, Michigan.
