Alma, MI – GRCC’s Women’s Tennis team lost their season opening match 1-8 on the road to the Alma College’s Scots, now 1-1, following a 2-7 loss to Spring Arbor in their debut contest of 2012.
GRCC Freshmen Taylor Curtis, #2 singles, and Hannah Tawney, #7 singles, produced hard fought wins for GRCC. Curtis defeated Megan Solano 6-4, 6-3, while Tawny defeated Karli Henning 8-5. The rest of the Raider’s singles players were unable to exit the court with wins.
GRCC’s doubles teams nearly edged out their Scots opponents. Gina Johnson and Jen DeMint fought to the bitter end falling 8-9 (5-7 tie break) to Alma’s Cutler and Meloche. GRCC’s two and three doubles of Madeline McIhargey and Tayor Curtis and Aubrey Kemme and Julie Daukss both lost 7-9.
While any loss is tough to swallow, GRCC’s Head Women’s Tennis Coach, Nikki Banks, is proud of how the team is developing.
“This is a very competitive squad. They prescribe to hard work and are 100% committed to a total team and individual effort at all times, both on and off the court. They are all stellar student athletes,” said Banks.
GRCC’s young team is led by three sophomore returners, Gina Johnson, Aubrey Kemme and Julie Daukss who each played vital roles in GRCC’s 2011-12 season where the Raiders ultimately wound up ranked 24
th NJCAA after National Tournament play.
The Raiders look to even out their season’s record to 1-1 as they travel to Ann Arbor, MI to take on the University of Michigan’s Club team this Sunday, September 22
