Final Women's Results
Aug. 29 2025, GOODELLS, MICH. – Grand Rapids Community College's cross country teams opened their 2025 seasons with impressive performances at the St. Clair Skippers Showcase, held Friday morning at Goodells County Park. The Raider women, coming off a fifth-place national finish last fall, captured the team title, while the men placed third in a competitive nine-team field.
The women's team earned first place out of seven schools with a score of 47, edging out host St. Clair County Community College and Lawrence Tech, who tied for second with 67 points.
Freshman Mackenzie Baldrica made an immediate impact in her collegiate debut, finishing third overall out of 58 runners with a time of 20:27. Sophomore Gloria Gaston, an All-American last season, followed closely in fifth with a 20:39. Freshman sisters Suzannah and Sophia DiPiazza were strong in their Raider debuts, placing 12th (21:14) and 14th (21:22), while freshman Vivian Idziak sealed the team's victory by finishing 17th (21:38).
Additional GRCC finishers included freshman Leah Williams (23rd, 21:58), freshman Binti Abdi (36th, 24:10), freshman Kadie Norman (37th, 24:12), and freshman Carolina Lopez-Lopez (52nd, 29:01).
"Today's race was a great day!" said head coach Sharon Becker. "Our team was able to run as a team and learn better how to race as a team. The team used the first mile to run with teammates so that they could then pick up the pace to start racing harder after the first mile. I'm very pleased with how well our team ran this first race of the season."
On the men's side, the Raiders finished third of nine teams with 85 points, behind Lawrence Tech (27) and Macomb CC (49).
Sophomore Isaac Skinner paced GRCC with a fifth-place finish out of 77 runners, crossing the line in 27:22. Freshman Corey Jones and sophomore Nate Fahey added solid performances, finishing 17th (28:39) and 18th (28:44). Freshman Brady Morrow (23rd, 29:08) and sophomore John DiPiazza (28th, 29:42) rounded out the scoring runners for the Raiders.
Also competing for GRCC were freshman Ralpheal White (51st, 33:35) and sophomore Samuel Pugh (59th, 34:33).
"Thought our men ran a pretty solid race today," said head coach Rob Hyde. "Beforehand I told them I wanted them all to hit the ball. We had some singles, some doubles and even some triples. So definitely a jumping point to build off, but nothing's broken that we have to fix."
Both teams return to action next Friday, September 5, when GRCC hosts the Raider Invitational at the Gainey Athletic Complex. The women's race begins at 10 a.m., followed by the men at 11 a.m.
