Oct. 8, 2024, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The men's soccer team stayed in the hunt for a conference title with a 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten St. Clair County Community College.  The women's volleyball team were also winners on Tuesday, sweeping conference foe Delta College, while the women's soccer team and men's golf team were also in action.

Men's Soccer Recap

The Raiders (6-4-2, 3-1-1) gave up a goal just 15 seconds into the game, but responded with an Andy Mendez-Reyes score in the 20th minute.  Both teams were held scoreless for the next 45 minutes, until the game winning score from Sophomore Elijah Maas.  It was Maas' fifth goal of the season and the first goal by Mendez-Reyes.

Brett Miller had six saves for the Raiders to pick up his fifth win.

As it stands now, the Raiders have 10 points in the conference with St. Clair County holding a two point advantage.  Each team has one more conference game remaining.

Conference Standings and Region Standings

The Raiders remaining schedule includes a trip to Terra State Community College on Oct. 12 and then they finish the regular season off with three home games, on the 14th, 18th and 22nd.

Women's Soccer Recap

A wind aided goal by St. Clair County at the 11-minute mark put the visitors up early and the lead would hold until the Raiders Alex Ellsworth breakaway goal (second of season) just before the end of the half.

An Ellsworth corner kick led to a header goal (fifth of season) by Ava Simonson just a minute into the second half and suddenly the Raiders were up 2-1. Unfortunately though, the lead didn't last long as the Skippers (5-5, 3-3) scored just two minutes later.  The visitors tacked on three more answered goals to pull off the 5-2 victory.

With the loss, the Raiders drop to 4-7-1 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

The teams next game is Thursday against Lawrence Tech JV at 2 PM at Midwest United.

Volleyball Recap

The No. 16 ranked volleyball team dominated Delta College in three sets, 25-14, 25-17, 25-14, to improve to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in conference.

Outside hitter Taylor Kik (15 kills, .519 hitting percentage) and middle blocker Lillian Peterson (nine kills, .500) were nearly unstoppable, with just two combined errors and not via the block.

Pin hitters Ava Schultz (five kills, .364) and Lizzie MacIntosh (four kills, .231) also put up solid numbers to help the Raiders win its 12th straight match.

Carle Bruggema had a season-high four aces, to go with her nine assists and season-high seven digs.

Sami Baker had a season-high 10 assists and also added a kill.

It's homecoming day for the Raiders in their next match on Thursday at 6:30 PM against Montcalm Community College.
