Sept. 29, 2023, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Abigail Buttermore scored two more goals, including the game winner, to lead the Grand Rapids Community College women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Owens Community College on Friday.

Meanwhile, the men's and women's cross country teams had great outings at the SC4 Invitational held in Marysville, Mich.

Buttermore scored the first goal 10 minutes into the match, but Owen's responded with a goal less than a minute later.  She then scored the go ahead/game winner with 32 minutes left in the match, and Alexandria Ellsworth added a penalty kick goal with a minute remaining to secure the victory.

Buttermore currently ranks fifth in the nation with 15 goals scored and sixth with 33 points

The win snapped a four-match losing streak for the Raiders who improved to 6-7 in their inaugural season.

In the women's cross country meet, Anna Tubbergen finished in sixth place out of 97 total runners with a time of 20:34 while Elicia Land's time of 21:46 landed herself in the top-15 for the first time this season.

Emily Adamy ran a 27:27 and newcomer Lillie Burns ran a 29:14 in her first collegiate race.

"Times were slower than the last couple meets because of the course and mud, but everyone ran very hard and it was very impressive," said women's head coach Sharon Becker. "Anna finishing fourth for all junior college runners is great encouragement and testament to her hard work."

In the men's meet three GRCC runners finished in the top-25 of 125 participants and the team finished tied for fifth out of 14 teams.

Freshman Joseph VanderKooi finished the 8k event in a time of 28:31, good enough for 11th place overall and sixth among all junior college runners.

Dan Kehoe and Austin Winkle ran side by side nearly the whole meet to finish in 29:40 and 29:46.

Anthony Lawlor, 31:01; and Issac Deleon, 36:01; rounded out the GRCC runners.

The women's soccer team resumes conference play Oct. 4 against Jackson College. The cross country teams will have two weeks to prepare for their next meet on Oct. 14 in Donaldson, Ind.
