Sept. 15, 2023, BYRON CENTER, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College's cross country teams kicked off the 2023 season on a perfect day at Douglas Walker Park on Friday at the Raider Invitational. 

Meanwhile, down in Indiana, the women's soccer team came out winners by a score of 5-1 and the men played to a 0-0 draw against Marian University-Ancilla.

The men's race consisted of individuals from 22 institutions around the state of Michigan, including Northwood University who dominated the competition with a final score of 17. Lansing Community College was second with 72 points and Aquinas College finished third with a score of 91.

GRCC's men's team fared well finishing in seventh place overall and fourth among all junior colleges. 

Freshman Joseph VanderKooi led the Raiders with a 39th place finish after an 8k time of 27:23.

The trio of Austin Winkle (28:22), Anthony Lawlor (28:26) and Dan Kehoe (29:11) ran as a pack for most of the race and finished in the top-80 of 163 runners.  Isaac DeLeon completed his first ever 8k in just under 37 minutes.

GRCC's women's team consisted of just two runners, but both excelled in their first collegiate 5k. 

Anna Tubbergen, of NorthPointe Christian, was in the top-10 for nearly the entire race and finished 11th out of 113 runners with a time of 19:53.

Northwood University also won the women's race, with Aquinas finishing second and Lawrence Tech third.

Abigail Buttermore paced the women's soccer team with two goals while Samantha Hunting, Brooklyn Williams and Claira Deyoung added the other three goals.  GRCC out shot the Chargers 44-6.

The men's team, ranked No. 13 in the nation, out shot the Ancilla 37-6, including 16-4 on shots on goal, but neither team could find the back of the net, playing to a 0-0 draw.

The women's team improved to 5-4 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while the men dropped to 6-1-1 and 5-0-1 in the MCCAA. 

The cross country teams return to competition on Sept. 22 in the Lansing Community College Invitational.  The soccer teams will both be in action Sunday the 17th at Davenport's Farmers Insurance Complex.  

GRCC is next scheduled to compete in the Lansing Community College Invitational on Sept. 22.
