GRCC Athletics Wins All-Sports Trophy

Grand Rapids, Mich. -- The Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) announced on Thursday, May 21 that Grand Rapids Community College has claimed the 2019-20 MCCAA Charlie Chanter All-Sports Award.

The Charlie Chanter MCCAA All-Sports Trophy is presented to the athletic program that is the most successful in a variety of sports. This is determined by a point system where each team is awarded points for where they finish in the standings, starting with 100 points for first. Teams are also awarded for winning or finishing runner up in the MCCAA tournament or standings. The total points are then averaged by the number of sports the school competes in.

The win is the 16th MCCAA Charlie Chanter All-Sports Trophy for the Raiders, and the first since 2013. The trophy is named after long time MCCAA Executive Secretary Charlie Chanter, who served in that position for 42 years. Chanter also served as the head golf coach for the GRCC Raiders.  History of Success

With this sports year being cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the MCCAA body voted to use the sports that finished their season or crowned champions. Those sports were Volleyball, Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Cross Country, Men's and Women's Bowling, Men's and Women's Basketball and Eastern Conference Men's Golf.

For the 2019-2020 school year, the volleyball team finished with an overall record of 33-7 winning the MCCAA State Championship, the Western Conference Title, as well as the NJCAA District B Championship. Winning both the MCCAA State Championship and the Western Conference title played a significant role in the Raiders clinching the All-Sports trophy.

The volleyball team advanced to the NJCAA DII National Tournament where they finished 5th place overall, the second highest finish at the national tournament in program history. Sophomore, Danielle Johnston was named an NJCAA DII All-American as well as NJCAA DII National All-Tournament Team, NJCAA District B All-Tournament Team MVP, All-Region, 1st team All-Conference, and All-MCCAA. Freshman, Annie Holesinger was named All-Region, NJCAA District B All-Tournament Team, All-MCCAA, Western Conference Freshman of the Year, Western Conference All-Freshman Team, 1st Team All-Conference and All-Region. Sophomore Jasmine Wellet was named NJCAA District B All-Tournament Team and 1st team All-Conference. Freshman Jamie Rozell was named 2nd Team All-Conference and Western Conference All-Freshman Team. Freshman, Kylie Oberlin was named NJCAA District B All-Tournament Team and Honorable Mention All-Conference. Sophomores, Jamie Wellet and Breanna Wickerink were also named Honorable Mention All-Conference for the Raiders.

Men's and Women's Cross Country also competed in the fall season. The women's team was ranked 20th in the final NJCAA poll. They competed in the NJCAA DI National Championships, where they finished 23rd overall. Freshman, Kiah Becker who was named All-Region and Western Conference All-Freshman Team, recorded a personal best time of 20:18, finishing the 2nd highest amongst MCCAA runners at the National Championships. Her 20:18 finish ranks 2nd highest in program history at the National Championships. Freshman, Diana Candela who earned All-Region accolades, finished 8th amongst MCCAA runners at the National Championships with a time of 21:11.

For the men's team, Sophomore, William Westveer ran his best race of the season at the National Championships with a time of 27:17. His PR performance placed him 6th amongst MCCAA runners. Freshman, Matthew Converse and Jack Kehoe also raced at the national tournament, finishing with times of 28:37 and 29:04 respectfully. Westveer, Converse, and Kehoe were all awarded All-Region honors, with Converse also earning All-Freshman team accolades.

The Raiders winter sports teams, Men's and Women's Basketball, were able to complete their seasons. The women's team finished tied for third in the MCCAA Western Conference and earned a berth to the NJCAA DII District Tournament that was hosted at Grand Rapids Community College. They wound up losing in the Semi-Finals.  The Raiders were led by Sophomore, Bethany Chick who was named 1st team All-Conference, All-MCCAA, and All-Region. Freshman Danielle Lamancusa was named 3rd team All-Conference, as well as MCCAA All-Freshman Team. Sophomore, Kendall Griffioen was named 3rd team All-Conference and MCCAA-West Defensive Player of the Year. Griffioen led all of NJCAA DII Basketball in blocks this past season. Freshman, Eurasia Green-Boyd as well as Sophomore's Rayven Mondy and Elizabeth Palmer earned Western Conference Honorable Mention accolades.

The Raiders Men's Basketball team finished sixth in the MCCAA Western Conference and also advanced to the NJCAA DII District Tournament that was hosted at Grand Rapids Community College. Just as the women, they would also bow out of the tournament in the semi-finals.  Throughout the season the men's basketball team took down #4 nationally ranked Mott Community College, 76-75 as well as upsetting the #3 seeded Mid-Michigan in the first round of the District Tournament to advance to the semi-finals. Freshman, Herman Brown was named 3rd team All-Conference and Western Conference All-Freshman Team. Freshman, Darien Banks also earned All-Conference accolades and was named All-Conference Honorable Mention.

The Golf team was looking to have another promising spring season, as during the fall they finished 1st at the Sam Kromer invite, 2nd at the Muskegon Community college Fall Invite, and 1st at the MCCAA Fall preview. Freshman, Tyler Hausserman earned PING All-Region honors as he was selected to the DII Central team, that consists of the top 10 golfers for the 2019-2020 season.

The Baseball and Softball teams season were cut short. Baseball was able to record three wins against Chipola College and Cornerstone JV (twice), and softball was able to record a win against Schoolcraft. Sophomores Troy Hedges (Grand Valley State), Trevor Patterson (Indiana Tech), Jimmy Wressel (Concordia), Jared Bujdos (University of Indianapolis) and Carter Chylek are committed to four year universities to continue their academic and athletic careers.  Freshmen Alexis Rutter (Adrian College) and Kenadie Baareman (Albion College) are committed to playing softball at the next level next year as well.
