Grand Rapids, Mich. -- Tonight's match at the Ford Fieldhouse will feature the 3rd ranked Raiders and the Bruins of Kellogg Community College. The Raiders who have won 21 straight matches (and 51 of past 53 sets) against Kellogg are looking to reduce their "Magic Number" to just one, while the Bruins are looking to clinch a berth in regionals should they win. The Raiders got the best of the Bruins earlier this year 3-1. Let's take a closer look at both teams.
Kellogg CC – The visitors come into tonight's match with an 18-6 overall record and are all alone in 3rd place with a 9-4 in conference record despite dropping a 5 set decision to Glen Oaks in their last match. Sophomore Outside, Hannah Landis leads the team with 284 kills and is one of the nation's best with 3.51 kills/set and 4.1 points/set. She is also 2nd on team with 172 digs, behind only Freshman, Kameron Haley, who has 364. Haley ranks in the top 20 of the nation with 50 aces. Freshman Outside, Rose Tecumseh, is 1st on the team in blocks with 67 and is 2nd on the team with 191 kills. Sophomore Setter, Kealey O'Day, is having a tremendous year with 10.18 assists/set, 110 digs and 22 aces. Rose and Hannah combined for 23 kills against GRCC last time, while Haley added 32 digs.
Grand Rapids CC – The 3rd ranked Raiders are coming off a huge win against arch rival Muskegon CC on Tuesday where they dropped the first set, but won the last three sets including 27-25 in the 4th set. The win gave them the tiebreaker, should GR and MCC tie for first. One of the nation's best hitters, Kendra DeJonge, had one of her best showings of the year. After connecting on 0 of 16 attempts in the first set, the Freshman racked off nine kills in the 2nd set and finished with a match high 22, her 2nd best of season. The Raiders 2nd best scorer, Hannah Stearns, finished with 17 kills which was also her 2nd best of the season. In the last meeting against KCC, DeJonge finished with 14 points and Stearns 12. Freshman Middle, Kayla Sayler, had a career high 10 kills on that night. Peyton Helsen had a team high 25 digs and three aces.
The Raiders, who are 142-11 at home during Coach Will's tenure, will be looking for their 14th win in a row and move one step closer to gaining a bye in Regionals. Should the Raiders win, their "Magic Number" will be just one, meaning their next win will guarantee them not just another conference title, but also a #1 seed in the MCCAA Tournament, but also that all important bye in regionals…. Should the Bruins pull off the upset, they would clinch a berth in regionals & would still be in contention for a berth in the MCCAA Tournament.
