Perrysburg, OH. – The road to the NJCAA Division II National Championship begins this weekend for the Raiders. GRCC is coming off a disappointing loss to Mott Community College in the MCCAA Conference Tournament 3 sets to 1. Even with the loss, GRCC has secured the number one seed in the NJCAA District F Regional. On the season, the Raiders have compiled an impressive 23-4 (14-0 MCCAA) record winning the MCCAA Western Conference crown, their fifth in the past seven years. GRCC finished 6
th at Nationals last season and return ten sophomores from that squad. Two years removed from winning the National Championship (2012), the Raiders looked poised to make a deep run. However, GRCC must first make it out of their region.
GRCC has played four of the six teams in their Regional (
Lansing,
Muskegon,
Ancilla and
Jackson), going 8-0 in those matches, losing only five sets combined in the eight victories. The two teams in the regional that the Raiders have not faced are #4 seeded
Vincennes University (14-22) and #2 seeded
Cincinnati State (18-17). The Lady Raiders head into the Regional as the strong favorite to advance to Nationals in Phoenix, Arizona.
On offense the Raiders will rely heavily on hitters
Shelby Ruffner,
Abbie Gortsema,
Rosalyn Wyse,
Micaela Deshetsky and
Jenna Karel, who combined to average 9 kills per game. Over the second half of the season, GRCC began platooning the setter position between
Michelle Holland and
Jamie Barrows. Holland (5.64 Assists/Game) and Barrows (4.29 A/Game) have allowed the Raiders offense to become more versatile. The defense is led up front by
Dacey Cook (0.95 Blocks/Game), Abbie Gortsema (1.15 B/Game) and Shelby Ruffner (1.11 B/Game). In the back row GRCC is led by
Amanda Glaza (4.16 Digs/Game),
Audrey Wyse (2.25 D/Game),
Maddie Stankus (2.36 D/Game) and
Katlyn Agren (2.40 D/Game).
