GRCC wins 3-2 over Jackson after being down 13-10 in the 5th

Grand Rapids, Mich. -- The Raider volleyball team beat Jackson College in thrilling fashion on Thursday night (Oct. 9th). The match came down to the 5th and final set, GRCC overcame a 13-10 deficit to win 15-13 and remain undefeated in the Western Conference (MCCAA).

The Raiders were lead by Rosalyn Wyse (12 kills, 41 attempts, .268 pct), Shelby Ruffner (10 kills, 22 attempts, .227 pct) and Dacey Cook(10 kills, 24 attempts, .333 pct). Cook also had a team high seven blocks. Jamie Barrows paced the Raiders in assists with 32, Audrey Wyse and Amanda Glaza were tops in digs with 21 and 17 respectively.

The first set was a hotly contested by both sides and was tied 24-24 when GRCC got a timely call by the lines judge to give them the point advantage. On the next serve Jackson could not get the ball over the net and the Raiders came away with the first set victory. Jackson was not deterred by the close lose in the first, and mounted a strong performance in the second to come away with the win 24-26. In the third set, GRCC came out with a strong performance led by Dacey Cook who made a number of athletic plays along the net. The Raiders jumped out to a 11-3 lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-15. Jackson again showed its competitive edge by mounting an impressive fourth set rally, winning 25-21. In the last frame, GRCC and Jackson went toe-to-toe, taking turns trading blows, only to see the score knotted at 7 apiece. From there, Jackson would take six of the next nine points to lead 10-13. However, the Raiders would not be denied. GRCC would win the next five points to claim the victory and remain undefeated in conference play.

The Raiders play next Ancilla College on Tuesday, October 14th at 6:30pm in the Ford Fieldhouse.
