Women's Volleyball

Volleyball team honored with post-season awards

Box Score Grand Rapids, MI – GRCC's women's volleyball team was honored with many individual awards following a successful regular season.  The Raiders, now 31-6, won their fourth straight District Championship this past weekend earning a berth into the NJCAA DII National Tournament to defend their 2012 national title.  The Raiders will rely heavily on the decorated athletes below as they look to bring back another belt to Grand Rapids.

Sophomore right side Emily Johnson racked up 333 kills, 27 aces, 371 digs, 102 total blocks thus far in 2013 earning the team co-captain these honors:  All-Region XII Team; All-MCCAA Team; First Team All-Conference.

Freshman co-captain and middle blocker Abbie Gortsema earned 297 kills with a .270 hitting percentage and 116 blocks earning these honors for 2013: All-Region XII Team; All-MCCAA Team; First Team All-Conference; MCCAA Western Conference All-Freshman Team.

Freshman setter Taylor Gates recorded 1,131 assists in 2013 along with 92 kills, 331 digs and 47 blocks in 2013.  Gates earned the following honors: All-Region XII Team; All-MCCAA Team; First Team All-Conference;  MCCAA Western Conference All-Freshman Team.

Freshman defensive specialist Amanda Glaza earned MCCAA Second Team All-Conference and NJCAA District F All-Tournament Team honors after amassing 544 digs in 2013 while adding 117 assists, 36 aces, and four kills.

Freshman middle blocker Shelby Ruffner earned MCCAA Western Conference All-Freshman team honors after totaling 254 kills and 120 blocks this season.  Ruffner was named the District F Tournament MVP following the Raiders' District Championship.

Freshman outside/right side hitter Micaela Deshetsky earned NJCAA District F All-Tournament Team honors after an outstanding showing in District F Play.  Deshetsky recorded 158 kills, 27 blocks and 109 digs this season.

Head Coach Chip Will was named the District F Coach of the Year for the third straight season—sixth time overall—after leading the Raiders to the National Tournament to defend their National Title.

The defending national champion Raiders will depart for the NJCAA DII National Tournament on November 19th.  Tournament play will commence on November 21st.   Tournament seeding will be announced once the rest of the District tournaments are finished.
