Feb. 12, 2025, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Community College's basketball teams faced off against Southwestern Michigan College on Wednesday night, with the women's team falling in a close contest while the men's team secured a strong victory.
Women's Game: Southwestern Michigan 48, GRCC 40
The Raiders (7-11, 5-5) struggled early, managing just four points in the first quarter. However, they found their rhythm in the second, outscoring the Roadrunners (17-8, 6-4) 13-12 to trail by just four at halftime, 21-17.
Despite never leading, GRCC kept the game within reach, cutting the deficit to just one point four different times in the second half. With 2:39 remaining, Tia Richard's free throw brought the Raiders within a single point at 39-38, but SWMC responded with a decisive 9-2 run to close out the game.
GRCC's defense forced 21 turnovers, but the Raiders struggled to capitalize, converting them into just eight points. Ava Schultz, who was recently named conference player of the week, had a strong defensive performance with a season-high five steals, along with seven points and seven rebounds. Tianna Daye led the team with 10 points, while Averi Peot pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Men's Game: GRCC 85, Southwestern Michigan 73
The Raiders (18-7, 5-5) took control early and never looked back. After a three-pointer by Benjamin Koubek at the 16:45 mark in the first half gave GRCC its first lead, the Raiders maintained their advantage for the rest of the game.
GRCC shot an impressive 58.3% from the field in the first half, building a commanding 48-31 halftime lead over SWMC (14-11, 3-7). The Raiders stretched their lead to as many as 20 points before finishing with the 12-point victory.
Marshaun Flakes led the way with a game-high 27 points, 19 of which came in the first half. He also contributed six rebounds, six assists, two blocks, and two steals in a well-rounded performance. Tyran Thomas added 20 points, a team-high seven rebounds, three steals, and a block. Jack Agema chipped in with 13 points, five assists, and two steals.
While the Raiders were outrebounded 47-34, they took care of the ball, committing a season-low eight turnovers. Their efficient shooting proved to be the difference, outshooting SWMC 49.3% to 36.8% overall and 45.0% to 27.3% from beyond the arc.

Both teams return to action at home on Saturday, hosting Marian University-Ancilla. The women's game tips off at 1 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.
