Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Raiders Battle Ranked Opponents on the Road; Volleyball Extends Win Streak to 12

Oct. 8, 2025, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was a busy Wednesday for Grand Rapids Community College athletics as all three fall teams were in action. The Raiders' men's and women's soccer squads traveled to nationally ranked Schoolcraft College, while the No. 14-ranked volleyball team visited rival Muskegon Community College.

Women's Soccer

The GRCC women's soccer team battled hard but fell 2-0 to No. 12-ranked Schoolcraft College, dropping to 4-5-2 overall and 2-4-1 in conference play.

The match was scoreless at halftime before the Ocelots broke through with goals in the 56th and 86th minutes. Schoolcraft controlled much of the possession, recording 25 total shots (13 on goal) and 13 corner kicks, while GRCC was limited to three shots—two from Ellie Lazowski and one from Emily Meyers.

Goalkeeper Nyleese Bazan-Hernandez had another strong outing for the Raiders, finishing with 10 saves in 90 minutes of play.

GRCC will look to bounce back when they visit St. Clair County Community College on October 10 at 5 p.m. for another conference matchup.

Men's Soccer

The Raider men's soccer team fell 4-1 to No. 13-ranked Schoolcraft, moving to 3-6-2 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

The Ocelots took control early with goals in the 5th, 16th, and 42nd minutes to lead 3-0 at halftime. GRCC got on the board late when Jaime Bautista scored on a breakaway in the 81st minute, assisted by Brandon Gomez. It marked Bautista's second goal of the season and Gomez's second assist.

Schoolcraft held a 23-8 advantage in shots (10-4 on goal). The Raiders split time between goalkeepers, with Zander Daley recording one save in the first half and Dylan Hudson adding five in the second.

GRCC will continue conference play at St. Clair County CC on October 10 at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

In Muskegon, the No. 14-ranked GRCC volleyball team extended its winning streak to 12 matches with a dominant 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-23, 25-16) over rival Muskegon CC. The win marked the Raiders' fifth straight victory over the Jayhawks and snapped MCC's 10-match win streak. It also gave the Raiders sole possession of first place in the conference with a 7-0 record.

GRCC's defense was the difference, holding the conference leader in kills to a .022 hitting percentage and limiting the Jayhawks to just .101 as a team.

The Raiders came out hot in the opening set, scoring the first five points and never trailing after an ace from Ava Tarsi put them ahead 10-8. The team hit .310 in the frame, led by Taylor Kik (.750), Christina Williams (.600), and Kaylee Kranz (.500).

Set two featured five lead changes, but GRCC held off a late Muskegon rally, sealing the 25-23 win after a Jayhawk service error. The Raiders then closed the match in dominant fashion with a 10-1 run in the final set to secure a 25-16 victory.

Match Leaders:

  • Kills: Kik 14 (.393), Kranz 9 (.240), Williams 5, McGlothlen 5, Walker 5
  • Assists: Tarsi 20 (tied season high), Walker 12
  • Aces: Walker 4 (tied season high)
  • Digs: Kik 13, Huizingh 11 (tied season high), Walker 10
  • Blocks: Lothschultz 7 (season high), McGlothlen 3

The Raiders (14-2 overall) will return to the court October 13 at Montcalm CC, looking to repeat their earlier 3-0 victory over the Centurions.
