Nov. 30, 2024, SIDNEY, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College's men's basketball team earned an 86-74 victory over Kuyper College JV in their opening game of the Montcalm County Shootout Tournament, improving their record to 5-2.
The Raiders dominated the game, leading for all but 20 seconds and building an advantage as large as 24 points. All 18 players on the roster saw court time, with 15 contributing to the scoring effort.
Freshman Marshaun Flakes led the way with an impressive 19 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals in just 21 minutes. Flakes also connected on three of the team's eight three-pointers. Sophomore Bashir Neely added 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while fellow sophomore Javon Golson contributed six points and eight rebounds.
GRCC controlled the boards with a commanding 48-28 rebounding edge, allowing only two offensive rebounds and scoring 16 second-chance points compared to Kuyper's three. The team's bench players were also impactful, scoring 42 points, nearly matching the starters' 44 points.
The Raiders will face Camp Battlegrounds Prep at 1 p.m. on Dec. 1 in their next tournament game.
