Raiders extend win streak to 11 in a row after a perfect Raider Challenge

Oct. 6, 2024, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The No. 17 ranked Grand Rapids Community College volleyball team extended its win streak to 11 matches after defeating Lake Michigan College and Southwestern Michigan College on Sunday in the Raider Challenge.

GRCC first defeated a very scrappy Lake Michigan team 25-21, 25-23, 25-20.  Taylor Kik and Lilly Peterson combined for 27 of the teams 46 kills and Meredith Simmons added eight kills while hitting .467.  Simmons and Cece Huizingh led the way defensively with 15 digs and Kik added 12.  Peterson led the team with four blocks.

In the final match of the tournament, GRCC won 25-13, 23-25, 25-16, 25-17.  Kik and Peterson were nearly unstoppable again, combining for 25 kills while hitting .420. Kik also led the team with 16 digs and Peterson led the team with four blocks.  As a team, the Raiders had just two reception errors in 70 attempts.

-Kills (177): Kik, 42; Peterson, 35; Simmons, 21; Lizzie MacIntosh, 19; Ava Schultz, 12; Sophia Ritsema, 11.
-Aces (40): Huizingh, 9; Ava Tarsi, 7; Simmons, 5; Kik and Carle Bruggema, 4.
-Assists (168): Tarsi, 75; Bruggema, 51; Sami Baker, 23.
-Digs (220): Simmons, 42; Kik, 38; Huizingh, 23; Peterson, 20; Tarsi, 19.
-Blocks (33): Peterson, 12; MacIntosh and Ella Gapczynski, 8; Jeanette Desser, 7.

GRCC, now 13-2 on the season, begins round two of conference play on Oct. 8 when it takes on Delta College at home.
