Oct. 10, 2024, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Ava Simonson and Taylor Kik led the Grand Rapids Community College soccer and volleyball teams to victory on Thursday. The soccer team was in non-conference action at Midwest United while the volleyball team played host to Montcalm on homecoming night.

The Raiders (5-7-1) took on Lawrence Tech's junior varsity squad and jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead just nine minutes into the game after goals by Allyson Seevers and Ava Simonson. But the visitors would fight their way back to tie it up at two going into the break.
Alexandria Ellsworth's goal in the 73rd minute proved to be the game winner as the Raiders defense and goal keeper Kendyl Bjorkman shut out Lawrence Tech the remainder of the game.
Simonson would add another goal in the 87th minute to make it a 4-2 final.
The Raiders resume conference play on Oct. 16, against No. 1 ranked Delta College.
Volleyball Recap
The No. 16 ranked Raiders (15-2, 8-0) took down the visitors from Montcalm Community College in straight sets, 25-13, 25-19, 25-16, to pick up their 13th straight win.
Same story as the last match for outside hitter
Taylor Kik (14 kills, .444 hitting percentage) and middle blocker
Lillian Peterson (eight kills, .467) who had another unstoppable night with just three total errors.
For the second straight match, the team's serve receive was nearly perfect with just one reception error.
Sophomore Lizzie MacIntosh had a solid night on the right and outside with six kills, six digs, two aces and 11 receptions.
Ava Tarsi led the team with 17 assists and had the match winning solo block.
The Raiders next match won't be until Oct. 17 when they host a very good North Central Michigan team that is in second place in the conference.
