Jan. 10, 2024, LANSING, Mich. – Ava Schultz scored a career-high 21 points for the Grand Rapids Community College women's basketball team, but it wasn't enough as the Raiders lost 67-52 at Lansing Community College Wednesday night.
In the nightcap, the men's basketball team (8-7) lost 98-93 despite 28 points from Joe Francis and a near triple-double by fellow sophomore guard Darrell Belcher.
The women's basketball team played the Stars tough in the first half, outscoring them after one quarter and only trailing by three at the half. Tia Richard, playing in her first game of the season, scored all 11 of her points in the half.
GRCC connected on a season-high 11 three pointers for the game and from five different players. Schultz made a season-high four and Richard added three.
Freshman Sophia Modderman was very aggressive on the glass all night, grabbing a season-high 12, including six on the offensive end.
In the men's game, the Raiders jumped out to a nine point lead, but Lansing fought back to tie the game at 50 at the half.
In a back and forth second half, Belcher tied the game for the eighth time with 4:58 remaining, but the Raiders wouldn't regain the lead the remainder of the game.
Free throws were by far the biggest difference in the game. GRCC was called for 25 fouls to just nine for Lansing, resulting in a free throw discrepancy of 31 shots for the home team and just 10 for the Raiders.
Belcher's complete game consisted of 14 points (6-11 from the field and 2-4 from three's) and a team-high 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals. He also had two blocks.
GRCC travels to the Upper Peninsula in a couple days to take on the mighty Norsemen of Bay College in Escanaba.
