Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer team stays perfect on season after upsetting No. 9 ranked Schoolcraft

Women's team drops 6-2 decision to No. 8 Schoolcraft

Sept. 1, 2023, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was another one for the books on Friday as the Grand Rapids Community College men's soccer team upset No. 9 ranked Schoolcraft College by a score of 4-0.

"The boys stood up to the challenge," said head coach Damiecko Smith. "Schoolcraft has a really good soccer program and their coach showed nothing but class, before and after the game.  I'm just happy to give the community something to be proud of."

After the victory, GRCC (4-0, 3-0) moves into sole possession of first place in the conference.

Most impressively, all four victories have come in shutout fashion, with suffocating play on the defense and outstanding goal keeping by Brett Miller

Miller had a season high 10 saves against Schoolcraft.

Offensively, Lucas Freriks kicked his fifth goal of the season at the 25 minute mark to begin the scoring.

Ten minutes later, Chibambo Munguakonkwaa scored his second goal of the season and GRCC would lead 2-0 at the half.

Just four minutes into the second half, Ocelots goalkeeper Brenden Ware - the current MCCAA player of the week - was ejected from the match after receiving a red card.

Mohamed Tamour would score the Raiders final two goals.  He now leads the team with eight goals.

GRCC's women's team (2-3, 1-3) snapped a two match win streak with a 6-2 loss to the No. 8 ranked Ocelots.

Down 4-0, Abigail Buttermore cut the deficit in half on back to back goals at the 59th minute and 63rd minute mark.  But, Schoolcraft's Kyra Brandon (four goals) went back to back herself to finish off the scoring.

Buttermore has a team-high five goals after her 90-minute performance on Friday.

The men's will be back in action with a road matchup against Aquinas College on Sept. 4 with a 12 p.m. kick off time. The women will play Sept. 6 at 2:00 p.m. against Lake Michigan College.
