Box Score 2 Aug. 24, 2023, PHOENIX, AZ. – The Grand Rapids Community College volleyball team lost a heartbreaker in five sets at South Mountain Community College, 25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 18-20. Meanwhile the women's soccer team dropped its second game of the season, falling at Kellogg Community College, 7-1.
GRCC was up 23-22 in the third set before South Mountain scored the final three points to take the set. But GRCC responded with a huge win in the fourth to force a deciding set. The Cougars responded again by scoring the final three points of the match after GRCC had an 18-17 lead.
Lillian Peterson led the way for Raiders, who dropped to 2-3 on the season, with 13 kills and five blocks. Lizzie MacIntosh led the defense with 17 digs and Carle Bruggema had 26 assists, nine digs and five aces.
GRCC's soccer team trailed 4-0 at the half and got its lone goal from Abigail Buttermore at the 51:47 mark of the game. Amelia Hancock had the assist on the goal.
The volleyball team continues its play in Arizona with a match at Pima Community College Thursday night. The soccer team looks ahead to its next game on Aug. 26 in its home opener against Terra State Community College at 1:00 p.m.
