Oct. 28, 2023, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The seventh ranked Raiders defeated 19th ranked Lansing Community College in the MCCAA Championship on Saturday to claim its 10th MCCAA title and second in a row.
Meanwhile in Marysville, the men's soccer team advanced to the Region XII Championship after a 2-0 win over Muskegon Community College.
GRCC's volleyball team jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the match, and won the first set 25-20 after an ace by sophomore setter Autumn Cole.
The Raiders went ahead 7-1 in the second set, led by as many as 12 and cruised to a 25-17 win. Lizzie MacIntosh seventh kill of the set gave the team a commanding 2-0 lead.
In the final set, GRCC trailed for the first time, 3-1, but scored the next six points and never looked back. Sophie Ritsema's sixth kill of the match gave the Raiders the victory.
MacIntosh finished with a match-high 12 kills and added nine digs. Cole led the team with 24 assists and had seven digs. Braelyn Berry had a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Vienna Koenigsknecht had 10 digs and a match-high three aces. As a team, GRCC only had one reception error.
GRCC is now 23-3 and winners of 21 in a row.
The team travels to Port Huron this Thursday to take on either Lake Michigan or Jackson College in its first match of regionals.
Back in Marysville, the men's soccer team took on Muskegon CC who it split against during the regular season. Both teams played to a nil nil tie at the half, but Mohamed Tamour would find Lucas Freriks for the first goal of the game in the 50th minute of the match. Six minutes later it would be Tamour scoring the goal on a great pass from Elijah Maas.
Tamour and Maas have proven to be one of the best duos in the nation all year. Tamour ranks second in the nation in goals scored (24) and third in nation with 54 points. Maas ranks sixth in the nation with 16 assists. Freriks ranks second on the team after his eighth goal of the season.
The soccer team will play Schoolcraft College for the third time this season in the Region XII Championship at 2:30 pm. GRCC defeated the Ocelots 4-0 at home earlier in the season and Schoolcraft beat GRCC 3-2 in its most recent match on Oct. 11. The match will have live stats and follow "NJCAA Region 12" on Twitter for all the updates.
