Back in the win column! Raiders soccer teams sweep Muskegon

Women 3-2, Men 2-0

Oct. 18, 2023, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College soccer teams snapped season-high losing streaks by picking up two big wins in conference play against Muskegon Community College on Wednesday.

GRCC's women's team had lost four in a row, including getting shutout in its last match at Muskegon on Saturday.  But this was a different Raider team that took the field, scoring two goals before the 10-minute mark in the game and three in the first half.

Brooklyn Williams (unassisted) and Abigail Buttermore (from Samantha Hunting) scored on breakaways putting the Raiders up 2-0.  Lydia Sowles put Muskegon on board at the 14:55 mark before Buttermore netted her team-high 21st goal of the season at the 31:19 mark.

Taeah Rensberger scored on a penalty kick late in the match for Muskegon, but it wasn't enough as GRCC was the victors, 3-2.

Hunting added the other assist in the match giving her a team-high 10 for the season.

The men's soccer team, now 11-3-1 on the season, snapped a rare two-match skid by shutting out the Jayhawks, 2-0.  The 18th ranked Raiders also clinched second place in the conference with a 7-2-1 record; not bad for a first year program consisting of all freshmen.

Yosia Mukanda was the first to score, just under two minutes into the match, from a throw-in by Xander Fredericksen.  Fredericksen scored the other goal, 27 minutes later on the pass from Elijah Maas.  Goalkeeper Daniel Beyer picked up the win and the Raiders defense allowed just three shots on goal.

The women's team plays its final match of the year on Saturday at 3:00pm against Lakeland Community College.  The men, who clinched a berth in regionals already, will take on Lakeland at 1pm. Both matches are at MacKay-Jaycee's Park and the first 100 students/alumni will receive a free GRCC Raiders scarf.
