Oct. 21, 2023, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College soccer teams swept Lakeland Community College in rainy conditions on Saturday to end regular season play.
The men's team, ranked No. 18 in the latest NJCAA Division II poll, opened up the day with a 5-0 victory to improve their record to 12-3-1.
GRCC dominated the match, outshooting the Lakers 36-4, and played 23 guys including two goalkeepers, Daniel Beyer and Jonathan Garcia.
Alexander Lagazo scored the first goal for the Raiders from Cristian Diaz at the five-minute mark. Mohamed Tamour then scored his first of two goals on the day six minutes later.
Jordan Marquez and Hani Alturkmani scored the other two goals for the Raiders, who earned the number three seed in regionals next week and will take on Muskegon Community College for the third time this season.
The women's season sadly came to end, but finished on a high note shutting out Lakeland 2-0.
Abigail Buttermore, one of the nations leading scorers with 22 goals, was the first to score at the six-minute mark and then Rylie Bjorkman scored the final goal at the 17-minute mark.
GRCC's women's team finished its first season of play with an 8-11 record and 5-11 in conference play.
The men's season resumes play in regionals on Oct. 28 with a first round match against Muskegon CC at 6:30 pm in Marysville, Mich. at the home of the St. Clair County Skippers. Should they win, they would play in the championship on the 29th at 2:30 pm.
