Oct. 11, 2023, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 9 ranked Grand Rapids Community College volleyball team won it's 18th match in a row after sweeping North Central Michigan College on Wednesday, 25-18, 25-15, 25-21.
The softball team also had a great outing, sweeping Aquinas College's junior varsity squad in its last games of the fall season. The soccer team's didn't fare as well, losing at Schoolcraft College.
The volleyball team was led by Braelyn Berry who had 13 kills and 14 digs. Berry was recently named the conference defensive player of the week for the second time this season.
Lizzie MacIntosh finished with 10 kills and a match-high four service aces.
Maureen Winstanley had a career night, hitting .714 with five kills and no errors, while leading all players with four blocks.
The softball team concluded its fall season with 9-4 and 8-1 victories. In game one, Alyssa Wierenga - who also plays on the volleyball team - tallied three hits and two RBI. GRCC had 11 hits in the game.
In the later game, GRCC put up four runs in the first and four more in the sixth and nearly got the shutout before Aquinas got on board in the top of the seventh. Amara Kline and Brynn McArthur each had three of the Raider's 13 total hits. Emily Obenauf hit a home run and Lilli Klop picked up the win, allowing just five hits and no earned runs.
The soccer teams faced tough competition in Livonia, but couldn't come back with a win. No. 7 ranked Schoolcraft defeated the women's team 7-3 and the No. 5 ranked Ocelots defeated the No. 13 ranked Raider's men's team 3-2.
The women's team fell to 6-10 overall and 4-10 in the conference. The men snapped a seven-match winless streak to fall to 10-2-1 on the season and 6-1-1 in the conference.
Abigail Buttermore scored two goals and Alex Ellsworth scored one goal for the women's team. Lucas Freriks and Mohamed Tamour scored for the men's team.
