Grand Rapids, Mich. -- The Raiders shot a season best 42% from the field on Friday night to take down the visiting Jets of Jackson College. With the win, the Raiders (9-14, 7-5) move back into a tie for fourth place in the
MCCAA West. The Jets, who beat GRCC back on January 10th (64-54), fall to 15-6 overall and 7-5 in the conference.
The Jets led three times in the opening four minutes of the game, but Freshman
Danielle Lamancusa (Rockford, MI) made back to back buckets for the Raiders that gave her team the lead for good at the 5:50 mark. GRCC led 17-9 after one and 29-22 at the half.
In the third quarter, Jackson would get to within five, 31-26, but on the ensuing Raiders possession,
Rayven Mondy (Kentwood, MI) assisted a wide open
Kendall Griffioen (Hudsonville, MI) for her third three pointer of the season. The Jets responded with a three of their own at the 5:06 mark in the third, but they wouldn't score another basket until 7:55 to go in the game. During that span, the Raiders went on a 20-0 run and lead by as many as 25 points.
Griffioen (7 of 9 from the field) led all scorers with 18. The nation's second best shot blocker added 6 rebounds and 4 more blocks, giving her 125 on the season.
Beth Chick (Grand Rapids, MI) chipped in with 15 points and 6 rebounds, while
Eurasia Green-Boyd (Grand Rapids, MI) added 12 points and 4 rebounds.
Besides their season best in overall field goal percentage, the Raiders also set season highs with 19 free throws made and opponents turnovers as the Jets had 23. The Jets had 23 turnovers in their last meeting as well.
Individual season highs include: Green-Boyd (8 free throws made), Griffioen (.778 field goal percentage),
Abigale Rouwhorst (4 rebounds), and
Elizabeth Palmer (6 steals). Palmer has 19 steals in her last five games.
The Raiders average margin of victory in their last three wins is now 26.3, including victories of 36, 23 and 20. The win snapped a two game losing skid with six more games until post season begins. They will return home on February 12th to take on Ancilla College who they defeated 82-76 in their first meeting this year.
