Grand Rapids, Mich. -- Wednesday night the Raider guards exploded for 50 of the team's 73 points in a five point victory over the visiting Chargers of Ancilla College. The victory improves the Raiders to 10-14 overall and 8-5 in the MCCAA-West. They are now all alone in fourth place with five games remaining before post season. The Chargers fall to 10-12 (6-7) and drop to sixth place in the conference.
The Raiders led by as many as 11, twice late in the third quarter, but the Chargers who scored 27 in the final quarter got to within one with 1:24 to go. Back to back buckets by Wellet and Green-Boyd gave the Raiders a 70-65 lead, but the Chargers hit a three with eight seconds left making it a three point game. The visitors were forced to foul and Green-Boyd would seal the victory with two of her season high 20 points giving her team the 73-68 win.
The top three scorers on the team this year are the Raiders starting front court, but it was
Rayven Mondy (22 points) and
Eurasia Green-Boyd who combined to score 42 to lead a strong back court that scored nearly 70% of their team's points.
Elizabeth Palmer and
Jamie Wellet scored the other eight points. Palmer also had 5 steals, giving her 24 in her last seven games.
Although an
off night from the field, Sophomore
Kendall Griffioen ended up scoring 11 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and blocked 9 shots. In the Raiders last meeting with Ancilla, Griffioen had a triple double with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 15 blocks.
Beth Chick was 5 for 10 from field and finished with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Both players played the entire 40 minutes.
The Raiders tied a season high with 8 three pointers made. Maybe the most important
stat of the night for David Glazier's Raiders was their season low 8 turnovers. Their previous low was 13 which they had on three seperate occasions.
After a three game home stand, the Raiders will be back on the road at 1:00 PM on Saturday the 15th. They will take on Glen Oaks Community College, a team they beat at home by 28 on January 20th. The Vikings are 12-12 overall and 4-9 in the conference.
