Volleyball finishes a perfect 4-0 in Raider Challenge

Grand Rapids, Mich. -- The Raiders concluded their annual tournament with two more victories on Sunday making them a perfect 4-0.  In match one, the Raiders took care of Alpena Community College in straight sets, 25-9, 25-16, 25-14.  The final match of the tournament was a Raider vs. Raider matchup with the team from the Western Conference coming out on top three sets to one, 25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20.

The opening match for the Raiders was quite special because for the first time in Raider Volleyball history we had a player play all six positions (OH, MB, S, DS, RS, L) in her career at GRCC.  Sophomore "Utility" player Lena Thompson was the Libero for the final set against Alpena to make history in Raider Nation. Thompson had 3 aces and a couple digs in the Libero jersey. 

Leading the pack for the Raiders against Alpena was Kendra DeJonge with 9 kills-0 errors-.333 hitting percentage. Freshman outside, Jenna Smaby had a great match herself with 8 kills in just 13 attempts hitting .615.  She also had 3 aces, 7 digs and 2 blocks giving her a match high 12 points scored.

Hannah Stearns chipped in with 7 kills and 3 blocks while Ally German added 6 kills and 2 blocks.  Lauren Helsen snagged her 8th double-double of the season with a team best 18 assists and 11 digs. 

The final match of the 19 team Raider Challenge was against Oakland Community College.  Both Raider squads came in on a 10 match win streak with the Western Conference team winning a tough match in four sets.  The GR win improved the 4th ranked team to 17-1 overall and extended their home win streak to 11 matches now.

DeJonge shinned once again with a season/career high 23 kills and a season/career high 18 digs in the win over Oakland.  German and Stearns combined for 20 kills and 9 blocks. Peyton Helsen had 18 digs and Kelsie Schultz had a season/career best 10 digs.  Lauren Helsen made it nine double-doubles on the season with 24 assists and 14 digs.  Autumn Severn added 17 assists and 8 digs.

The Raiders will have just one match this week, a 6:30 pm showdown against Glen Oaks Community College on Tuesday at home.  The Vikings are 16-9 overall and third in the conference with a 6-3 record.
