Box Score Battle Creek, MI – Grand Rapids Community College's 2016 baseball season came to an end Wednesday night (May 18) in the first round of the 2016 NJCAA Region XII Baseball Tournament. GRCC finished the season with an overall record of 20-25 and a MCCAA conference record of 16-10. The Raiders finished in a tie for third place in the 14 team conference with Delta College and secured a bid to the NJCAA Region XII Tournament. GRCC fell to #3 seed Delta College 5-3 in the first round of the double elimination tournament. After losing the first game, GRCC was sent to the loser's bracket to face #1 seed Jackson College. GRCC failed to generate much offense and lost their second game 5-1, eliminating them from the tournament and ending their season.
Sinclair Community College won the Region XII Tournament, beating Kellogg Community College 13-5 in the final, advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament in Enid, Oklahoma.
Although the season ended on a disappointing note, many of GRCC's student-athletes were recognized for their stellar achievement on the field during the 2016 season. Leading the way for the Raiders in 2016 was freshman pitcher
Sam Traver, who was named to the All-Region XII, All-MCCAA 1
st Team and All-MCCAA All-Freshman Team. Traver finished the season with a 7-3 record, 2.52 ERA, 2 shutouts and 60 strikeouts in 13 appearances. Fellow pitcher
Justin Palmbos was also honored for his strong play, as he was named to the All-MCCAA 3
rd Team. In 14 appearances, Justin posted a record of 4-6, 3.95 ERA, 85 strikeouts, 2 shutouts and 5 complete games.
GRCC was also represented on the all-conference teams by five position players. Sophomore
Brenden Johnson (1
st base) was selected to the All-MCCAA 2
nd Team. Johnson led the team in several offensive categories, batting average (.342), doubles (12), total bases (62), slugging percentage (.554) and on-base percentage (.441).
Dalton Phillips joined Johnson on the All-MCCAA 2
nd Team and was also selected to the MCCAA All-Freshman Team, adding an impressive list of stats. Phillips finished one point behind Johnson in batting average (.341), while pacing the team in runs (31) and hits (44). Three Raiders were named Honorable Mention All-MCCAA, Sophomore
